Anu is very happy because her father is coming back after two weeks’ long outstation trip. She is also happy for the fact that once her father comes back after his official trips, she gets to sleep with her grandmother. On such special days, she gets to hear many interesting stories from her grandmother. The grandmother is a treasure of stories: adventure, fairy tales, fables, ghost stories, etc. What is wonderful about Anu is that instead of getting frightened she starts laughing when she hears stories about ghosts. Anu misses the company of her father on most of the days of a month as his job requires frequent travel. But once he comes back he does every trick in the book to make sure Anu does not get an excuse to complain about her father’s outstation trips. He also takes care of Anu’s mother and grandmother in the same way.
Anu is looking down through the railing of her first floor balcony. Grandmother is lying on a mat and is trying to absorb as much sunshine as possible to get plenty of vitamin D for her fragile bones. When a cab stops near her house, Anu starts jumping and clapping; because she can easily recognize her father even from the silhouette inside the cab. Rajat Mehra gets down from the cab, picks his luggage and cranes his neck to wave his hands at his daughter Anu who is waiting in the balcony. Once in, Rajat picks up his darling daughter and she starts beaming with a thousand watt smile.
While Rajat is in the bathroom, Anu’s mother opens his luggage and takes out all the gifts which have come for Anu. There is a beautiful doll with pink frock embellished with magenta floral pattern. There is a book on wild animals. There is a big bar of chocolate too. The book has plenty of colorful paintings of animals and a few sentences about the animals. Anu sits in her grandmother’s lap and keeps the doll in her lap and then starts looking at pictures of animals in the book. She will indulge in the chocolate once she will get bored of staring at the book.
Anu’s mother has made oatmeal with loads of green vegetables for breakfast. While all the adults are happy to have the so-called healthy breakfast, Anu gets the special treat of banana sandwich with strawberry jam and hot chocolate drink. Anu’s mother has already ordered for chicken from the neighborhood butcher and has planned to make chicken biryani for lunch. On the breakfast table, it was decided that the family would go to the nearby shopping mall to enjoy the weekend. They also need to buy some quilts and blankets because winter has just started after the festival of Diwali.
After breakfast, the family sits in the balcony to enjoy a sunny weekend. Anu’s mother is talking non-stop to Rajat and he is patiently hearing to her endless talk. She is ably supported by the grandmother in the form of some expert commentary. Anu is soon overpowered by the combined warmth of her father’s lap and the sun, and falls asleep.
In the evening, the Mehra family is ready to go for the weekend shopping. Grandmother does not want to go because she prefers to be at home to avoid catching corona; the deadly virus. So, Rajat, his wife Poornima and Anu say goodbye to grandmother and hop in the car. After about half an hour drive, the car reaches the shopping mall which is strangely named as the Park Town. The name is strange because there is no park to be seen anywhere near the shopping mall. But you can see some grown up trees which have been hurriedly transplanted in order to inaugurate the shopping mall on time. After entering the mall, Rajat sits on a cozy looking massage chair and gives his wife all the freedom to enjoy shopping and to buy whatever is there on her wish list. After about ninety minutes, Rajat gets a call on his mobile phone. Poornima is on the other side, asking him to pay the bill as her shopping is over. The rear seat and the boot of the car is full of all kinds of goodies, and it is showing all the effort Poornima had taken in enjoying the weekend shopping. On their way back, Poornima and Anu are enjoying ice-cream and Rajat is enjoying driving his car.
